The Song of Wandering Aengus

about

In 3rd year university I was riding the subway and met a 70-year-old man named Donal. He was wearing cycling gear, had his bike with him, and I was coming back from class. Donal, I learned as we talked, was from Ireland and he had cycled from one end to the other. I told him I'd never been, but I was studying all about it for my degree and longed to go to Ireland.

He looked at me and when he began to speak the rest of the world fell away. His words were this poem by W. B. Yeats and he cast a spell on me. I fell deeply in love with him then and remain willingly so, wherever his wanderings have taken him.

lyrics

I went out to the hazel wood
Because a fire was in my head
And cut and peeled a hazel wand
And hooked a berry to a thread
And when white moths were on the wing
And moth-like stars were flickering out
I dropped the berry in the stream
And caught a little silver trout

When I had laid it on the floor
I went to blow the fire a-flame
But something rustled on the floor
And someone called me by my name
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded in the brightening air

Though I am old and wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands
I will find out where she has gone
And kiss her lips and take her hands
And walk among long dappled grass
And pluck till time and times are done
The silver apples of the moon
The golden apples of the sun
