John says:
This was a groove that just popped out while I was playing with drum loops. I found this syncopated beat and it evoked a sort of driving relaxation that called out for some airy guitar. A few minutes later I had this chorus-drenched tremolo part with loads of open-stringed dissonance that sounded really cool but I had no idea what to do with. Loved the vibe, but no melody or lyrics were calling to me, so I hit save and moved on.
FAWM kicked in, and when I thought about who might fit this groove, I thought of Leslie. It's been a long time since we've had the chance to work together, and that's a shame. This was easy and fun, and she was able to pull a melody out of this that I couldn't hear and couldn't have written.
As I've been doing most of this FAWM, I've fought my natural instinct to add a billion layers. This is just a single guitar, bass, drums and vocals. Each instrument gets its own space and its own voice, and the song has room to breathe. I'm liking that.
Many thanks to Leslie for lending her skills and words to this. She elevated it way beyond where I thought it could go.
Leslie says:
We've been collaborating for 10 years, on and off, and it makes me really happy to add this song to that collection. I tend to think deeply about lyrics and storytelling, but with pop especially, you want to balance syllables and meaning to match the groove. Compliment it, not compete with it. I think we did that.
Self-care is essential, folks. Sometimes you just need to pull back and heal for as long as it takes, any way you can.
lyrics
I’ve been kind of sleeping underwater
With cannon balls
On an ocean floor of soothing pressure
And whale bone walls
This weighted blanket sends me to sleep
This luminescence stars in the deep
You all don’t know what you’re missing
Above ground
Pull back
Sink beneath the water
Hide and found
There’s a kind of bliss when no one’s looking
Or keeping track
At the bottom of your inhibitions
As you unpack
This simple moment, tangle-free
These expectations strangle me
You all don’t know what you’re missing
Above ground
Pull back
Sink beneath the water
Hide and found
This silent treatment sounds so sweet
This decompression, slow release
You all don’t know what you’re missing
Above ground
Pull back
Sink beneath the water
Hide and found

Mischief was my introduction to the spellsongcraft of S.J. Tucker who builds sonic story sculptures with such precision and grace of motion that I am borne up on her bright beating wings of wonder. Leslie Hudson
My favourite album by Karine Polwart, an understatedly brilliant songwriter, serene and incisive, who weaves resistance, hope, joy and heartbreak into hauntingly crafted arrangements rich in harmony. Leslie Hudson

A silky, smooth, sultry voice weaving lyrical imagery upon a canvas of exquisite tonal contours. Immensely pleasurable. The bouncy cheer of " Little Bird" is a delightful contrast to the dusky jazz groove of this truly beautiful album. Much gratitude for you S J ! roddylloyd
