Medb is a goddess queen of enormous appetites, ruthless, sovereign and autonomous. Famous for her beauty, her generous thighs, her patronage of champions, and never backing down from a fight, she rules the western province of Ireland, ferociously guarding her wealthy lands from any and all incursions.
Story's country of origin - Ireland
Based on the epic "Táin Bó Cuailgne," as translated by Thomas Kinsella, The Tain (Oxford: Oxford UP, 1969, 1990). Also inspired by the long relationship I have had with Medb herself over the years, my research, and my visits to her sacred sites. Visit www.rathcroghan.ie for more information.
lyrics
Verse 1
I’ve never had a man
Without another waiting in his shadow
I’d never take a man
Who was greedy or jealous or callow
Lift
For I am a woman of wealth and fame
A daughter of kings without fear or shame
Intoxication is my name
Aren’t you the lucky one, lover?
Chorus
I am the mead and this is my cup
Drink up, my love, drink up, drink up
I am the mead and this is my cup
Drink up, oh, my love
Verse 2
I’ve never been afraid
To cause a little bit of trouble
I’ll never be afraid
To burn it right down to rubble
Lift
For I am a woman who plays the game
Sweeter than honey, as hot as flame
And if you get burned then you’re to blame
Aren’t you the lucky one, lover?
Chorus
I am the mead and this is my cup
Drink up, my love, drink up, drink up
I am the mead and this is my cup
Drink up, oh
Drink up, oh
Drink up, drink up
Drink up, my love
Verse 3
I’ve never been the kind
To leave it all up to the men
I’ll never be the kind
To put it all off until then
Lift
For I am a woman no man can tame
Sovereign when into the world I came
Your life will never be the same
Aren’t you the lucky one, lover?
Chorus
I am the mead and this is my cup
Drink up, my love, drink up, drink up
I am the mead and this is my cup
Drink up, oh
Drink up, oh
Drink up, drink up
Drink up, oh, my love
Leslie Hudson is a Canadian singer songwriter and pianist. Their albums range from storytelling styles to bluesy bar rock to
dialed-up, full-band homages to pop culture. With lyrical piano skills and a voice that cuts through the crowd, their songs dive deep into archetype and folklore, modernizing ancient voices & shining a spotlight on the shadowy paths we walk through life, myth and media....more
Mischief was my introduction to the spellsongcraft of S.J. Tucker who builds sonic story sculptures with such precision and grace of motion that I am borne up on her bright beating wings of wonder. Leslie Hudson
My favourite album by Karine Polwart, an understatedly brilliant songwriter, serene and incisive, who weaves resistance, hope, joy and heartbreak into hauntingly crafted arrangements rich in harmony. Leslie Hudson
A silky, smooth, sultry voice weaving lyrical imagery upon a canvas of exquisite tonal contours. Immensely pleasurable. The bouncy cheer of " Little Bird" is a delightful contrast to the dusky jazz groove of this truly beautiful album. Much gratitude for you S J ! roddylloyd
