Midwinter EP

by Leslie Hudson

I woke up intending to record my version of the Huron Carol on Midwinter (Dec 21) and wound up recording 4 more seasonal songs as well.

These are 5 of my favourite songs about snow and winter, moon shadows, darkness and hope. The Winter Solstice holds a special place for me. This is the season where the Northern Hemisphere welcomes the longest night of the year because we know it marks our tilting back toward the light.

I recorded these live as one-takes using my Zoom H2 (that's about as raw as I get), Charlie Jacklin mastered them: from conception to completion in 12 hours. My gift to you this season.

Track Name: Huron
'Twas in the moon of wintertime
When all the birds had fled
That mighty Gitchi Manitou
Looked down to Earth and said:
Behold the night when stars grow dim
And on the wind a winter hymn

This is the longest night
Children, don't fear
You are light and I am here

Beneath the moon of wintertime
When frozen was the ground
And all the snow lay deep and white
And muffled every sound
Around the fire, safe and warm
The people sang of star and storm

This is the longest night
Children, don't fear
We are light and we are here

The coldest moon of wintertime
Casts shadows on the snow
Where Mother Earth and Father Sky
Are bathed in winter's glow
Receive the gifts of peace and light
May strength and love be ours tonight

This is the longest night
Children, don't fear
We are light and we are here
We are here
We are here

In the moon of wintertime, don't fear
